Chinatown

by Shiow Chai Hong
Acrylic on canvas

This work represents a cheerful and crowded scene in Chinatown. The majority of warm tones on the architecture reflect a sense of intimacy in traditional Chinese relationships. Chai Hong was inspired by the vivid atmosphere of a photo in Chinatown. It was challenging to simplify the many details of goods and stalls, as well as the complexity of the streetscape as it was the first time that she has painted a perspective like this.

About Shiow Chai Hong

Diagnosed with polio at a young age, Chai Hong never considered herself artistic until a visit to an art exhibition changed her life. Encouraged by a friend, she tried painting and discovered a lifelong passion. Over the years, she has developed her skills across watercolour, acrylic, and oil, with a special affinity for adding texture to her landscapes. Despite physical challenges, she paints with a calm determination and quiet joy that reflects her personality. Today, art is not just her creative outlet but a source of happiness she cannot imagine living without.
